hong kong: oxfam rice event
From city to city I have seen many Oxfam International stores and initiatives. Oxfam is an "international confederation of 20 NGO's working with partners in over 90 countries to end the injustices that cause poverty." The global scale and impact of the organization is incredible.
When I was walking home from blogging/planning on a rainy and not-so-productive day, I took a turn different than I had expected. I came across this beautiful Oxfam stand and Brett's (volunteer) smiling face. It made me so happy! Brett and his fellow volunteers were raising funds for small farmers facing poverty. By selling rice there are able to make a positive impact on the well-being of farmers in the community.
The different quantities of rice sold provide different resources for the farmers and their families, such as, children's activities or training. This is just one of the many initiatives that Hong Kong Oxfam and Oxfam International are working on.
Last year, Oxfam International helped over 22 million people and inspired over 1 million actions by global citizens for social change! You can learn more about your specific region and how you can get involved to help the fight against poverty.
I was so grateful for this surprise and happy to meet a new friend in Brett as I walked along!
Also, as I was then rerouting myself back home, I saw a sign for a rooftop garden. One of my favorite things in the world! I immediately ran to it and found I was the only one up there in this peaceful get away! Such beautiful views and light calming music as I strolled above the building tops and through the trees.
