marrakech, morocco: cop22
As I've mentioned in previous posts, One Young World is an organization near and dear to my heart. It is a non-profit that brings together young leaders to activate change in the world. My colleague Donte and I had the great honor to attend twice- once in Bangkok and once in Ottawa.
At Ottawa in 2015, I represented the US in a video calling on global leaders to take action at COP21 to reduce the impacts of climate change. It was an incredible experience to hear perspectives from over 150 countries and to be advised by industry experts. I am very grateful for their guidance. The speech that stuck out most to me was the Marshall Islands. People there are already losing their homes and land. Climate change is real and it is happening and we must all take action to protect our earth.

Upon arriving to the Marrakech airport, signs were still all over from COP22 last year. In the city, roundabouts had flowers in the shape of COP22 and there were energy meters spread throughout. It was amazing to see such a presence and be in a place where this occurred! It is so important to have open dialogue and work together to create change. One thing I thought of was the knowledge and awareness that exists. Do people know what COP22 is, what carbon emissions are, what impact this has on them and what impact they have? It makes me think of the potential and opportunity there could be if there was this coverage on a more palatable and actionable every day level.
