berlin, germany: berlin wall
Upon arriving to Germany on Wednesday, our first stop was the Berlin Wall. Having grown up learning about its history and impact on the country, it was wild to see and feel, especially since it occurred so recently. Standing on the line of what was East and West Germany and being able to look down the divide was so moving. The site has visual and audio installations to learn more and hear of the stories associated with the wall. It was heart-breaking to hear about the helplessness of divided families and those trapped in their current state, while also, inspiring to hear about the changes and progress to date.
I absolutely loved the quote written on this piece of the wall. "There is no path to peace. Peace is the path." This quote by Gandhi is one of my favorites as it conveys the importance of peace being engrained always, rather than a goal or a far-off ideal.
The juxtaposition of what the wall stood for, combined with this quote, and a crack through to the other side really stuck out to me. With so much talk of "building walls" in our recent landscape, I truly felt the power of the openness of the world with witnessing the breakdown of this wall.
I am so grateful to be able to hop from country to country without issue across Europe. Being able to soak up the languages, the cultures, the people and the cities is so powerful and showcases the beautiful diversity that is our world. My wish is that we continue to stand for open hearts, open minds, open borders for all for our world to share, connect and make a difference.
